Hey there! Have you ever found yourself comparing the story of your life, your unique ‘book’, to the narratives others are living out? It’s a common struggle we all face as we walk our paths towards fulfilling God’s vision. Remember, each of our lives is like a distinct book authored by God Himself, where every page holds a purpose designed just for us. I like to say that each life is a novel, differing genre, plot, and prose, but authored by the same Divine Hand.” So, let’s embrace this truth: “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10).

“Each life is a novel, differing genre, plot, and prose, but authored by the same Divine Hand.” NFP

Today, I want to give you a few strategies to help you avoid the comparison trap.

  1. Understand God’s Unique Plan for You: Each of us has a unique path, a distinct ‘book’ in God’s library, with chapters that unfold in His timing. Just like different body parts have different functions (1 Corinthians 12:12-27), we too have distinct roles in the Body of Christ. Embrace your individual journey and trust that God’s plan for you is perfect.
  2. Avoid Comparing ‘Books and Chapters’: It’s easy to glance at someone else’s ‘chapter’ and feel we are behind or lacking. But your ‘book’ is written by the greatest Author, and He knows exactly what your story needs and when. Your chapter 3 might be someone else’s chapter 20, and that’s okay.
  3. Celebrate Others’ Successes: Instead of feeling threatened by others’ achievements, let’s celebrate them as victories in the Kingdom of God. When one member succeeds, the whole body benefits. “Rejoice with those who rejoice” (Romans 12:15).
  4. Counter Comparison with Gratitude: When you find yourself comparing, pause and give thanks for the blessings in your life. Gratitude shifts our focus from what we lack to the abundance we have in Christ.
  5. Keep Your Eyes on Jesus: He is our ultimate role model and guide. When we focus on Christ, we are less likely to get distracted by others. “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith” (Hebrews 12:2).
  6. Seek God’s Affirmation, Not the World’s: Our value and worth come from God, not from worldly standards or achievements. Spend time in prayer and in God’s Word to remind yourself of your identity in Christ. Listen to divine affirmations  while driving, cleaning, working, etc.
  7. Use Your Gifts for God’s Glory: God has given each of us gifts to serve Him and others. Focus on using your gifts to fulfill the vision He has placed in your heart. “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace” (1 Peter 4:10).

Now grab your journal and let’s reflect…Ask yourself..

  1. In what ways have I compared my ‘book and chapters’ to others, and how can I refocus on the unique story God is writing for me?
  2. How does recognizing my life as a unique narrative written by God change how I view my current challenges and successes?
  3. If I view my life as a book that God is writing, what themes or experiences do I hope to see in the next chapters, and how can I actively participate in bringing these to fruition in alignment with God’s will?
  4. When have I seen God’s hand at work in difficult chapters of my life, turning challenges into opportunities for growth and deeper faith?

Remember, our journey is not a competition but a collaboration in Christ’s mission. Let’s encourage each other to stay true to our God-given visions and celebrate the beautiful diversity in our callings.
