We’ve all made them…excuses.
Sometimes they’re dressed up as justifications, sometimes they’re rooted in fear, and other times they’re disguised as wisdom. But no matter what form they take, excuses are costly. They delay obedience. They paralyze progress. They block breakthrough.
Excuses can feel safe, but they’re actually spiritual blindfolds. They keep us from seeing what God has made possible.
Let’s confront the truth: Excuses are the language of limitation, not of faith. If you’re going to walk in the fullness of your assignment, whether it’s healing, business, ministry, or mindset, the excuses must go.
What is an Excuse, Really?
At its core, an excuse is a justified lie.
It sounds good. It feels protective.
But it deflects responsibility and cloaks disobedience.
Excuses sound like:
- “I don’t have enough time.”
- “I’m just not ready yet.”
- “That’s not my personality.”
- “I’ve been hurt before.”
- “God understands.”
While grace covers us, truth sets us free.
“You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” – John 8:32
Why Excuses Are Dangerous
Here’s what excuses actually do:
1. They Delay Destiny
God is not waiting on your perfection. He’s waiting on your yes!
Delaying action because of fear, doubt, or uncertainty slows your spiritual momentum.
2. They Disguise Disobedience
When we ignore God’s promptings because “we’re not ready,” we disguise rebellion as hesitancy.
“If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land.” – Isaiah 1:19
3. They Feed Fear
Excuses reinforce the fear narrative. The more you validate your fear, the stronger it becomes.
Let’s Get Honest: What Are You Avoiding?
Excuses are often a response to pain, pressure, or past wounds.
Here are five areas where excuses commonly hide:
1. Obedience to God’s Instruction
(“I’m still praying about it…” when you know He already spoke.)
2. Personal Healing
(“It’s not that deep” or “I’ve already dealt with that.”)
4. Speaking Up or Setting Boundaries
(“I don’t want to rock the boat.”)
3. Starting Your Business or Ministry
(“Once I finish one more course…” or “When the kids are older…”)
5. Investing in Yourself
(“I can’t afford it” or “It’s not the right time.”)
3 Spiritual Shifts to Stop Making Excuses
1. Shift from Fear to Faith
God doesn’t call the equipped. He equips the called.
You’ll grow on the journey, not before it.
“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” – 2 Timothy 1:7
2. Shift from Delay to Devotion
Delayed obedience is disobedience. Prioritize God’s timing above your comfort.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” – Proverbs 3:5
3. Shift from Excuses to Execution
Take one step in the direction God is leading. Faith is proven in action.
“Faith without works is dead.” – James 2:17
